One person not complaining about the weather in Dunedin is Helen Grant.

The 20-year-old New Zealand Drama School student is home from Wellington, preparing for a two-month visit to the chilly midwinter climes of Zurich, Switzerland.

She says, with tongue in cheek, the weather in Dunedin is ideal for getting used to the conditions in Europe at the moment.

As part of her third year at the drama school, Miss Grant said students were given two months to get acting work experience.

While many of her fellow pupils would be spending time on the sets of Shortland Street and Outrageous Fortune, she was accepted as an intern at the Schaustielhaus Zurich to work on a production of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night by the Imperial Court Theatre of Vienna.

"I'm going to be in the presence of some pretty big names in the European acting arena.

"This is a time for me to go out into the industry to look at professional actors at work.

It's pretty exciting."

Miss Grant began her acting career by appearing in shows at the Fortune Theatre in Dunedin while studying at Otago Girls High School.

She planned to complete her bachelor of performing arts (acting) degree at the New Zealand Drama School in November this year and hoped to forge an acting career in Europe.

"I would like to work in New Zealand, but I love Shakespeare. There's not much work for that kind of acting here, so it means I will probably end up working in Europe."

Miss Grant departed for Europe yesterday.
