DCC reticent over payment for overbridge

The Dunedin City Council will not say how much it received from KiwiRail and Port Otago to offset its $272,255 bill for repairs to a damaged pedestrian overbridge.

However, it appears the council may have received only a partial payment towards the cost of repairing the bridge, which was damaged when struck by a freight train on February 12, 2008.

The Otago Daily Times last week reported the council had negotiated a settlement with KiwiRail and Port Otago.

Asked yesterday about the deal, council chief executive Jim Harland would not say how much of the bill was covered by the settlement, citing a confidentiality deal signed as part of the agreement.

He would say only that the amount received reflected the state of the 104-year-old bridge before the collision and improvements made as part of repairs.

"The council is satisfied with the result we achieved."

The force of the collision partially demolished the bridge, with Australian tourist Chau Bui falling to the tracks below.

Miss Bui, who sustained minor injuries, last month received an email from KiwiRail chief executive Jim Quinn, apologising for the accident and the delay in the company's response, and offering free travel on its rail and ferry services.
