"Nailing the role of elected member" was another.
New elected representatives for Dunedin and the Queenstown Lakes, Waitaki and Waimate districts received training yesterday from Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) to help them get up to speed with their roles.
Dr John Chambers was one incoming Dunedin councillor who attended the induction and he said he was looking forward to getting on with the job.
There had been good sessions in the morning about iwi relationships and government legislation, he said.
Dr Chambers said the Dunedin City Council had also run a packed programme since the election and this had been helpful.
Another incoming city councillor, Andrew Simms, said the morning’s programme had been useful.
"I’ve been impressed with the material so far," he said.
Melissa White was first elected to the Queenstown Lakes District Council through a by-election in the Arrowtown-Kawarau ward in 2023.
That meant she missed the training councillors in the previous term received.
Cr White said, even having gained some experience as a councillor, the content was useful for her.
LGNZ learning experience manager Tania Hawkins said the induction should help new elected members "hit the ground sprinting".
LGNZ policy director Simon Randall said it was a chance for new elected members to meet their peers and set them up for success in the years ahead.
Elected members from the Clutha district were unable to attend the induction, as an emergency response continued there after the stormy weather.
