The surf was up at Dunedin’s St Clair Beach during Easter and more than 200 athletes took advantage of the conditions.

South Island Surf Champs contest director Jimi Higgins said the waves were probably the biggest there had been during national competition this season.

Twenty-seven hours of surfing across three days were followed by a band and prizegiving last night, he said.

Teenager Taimana Marupo won the open men’s category and Chloe Groube the open women.

Three under-14 male surfers from Otago were chosen for the Rising Tides programme — Jordy Elder, Thomas Owen and Max Wooffindin.

Mr Higgins said they would spend a day with professional surfers at a championship tour event in Raglan in May.

The 60th South Island Surf Champs were hosted by the South Coast Boardriders Association.

Dunedin Mayor Sophie Barker said it was a fantastic event for the city.

‘‘Huge kudos to the organisers for their well-run event, and their commitment to promoting Dunedin as a surf centre,’’ she said.

‘‘I’m glad the monster waves of Thursday settled down nicely for our guests.’’
