The councillor who led calls for a review of Enterprise Dunedin says frustration had been brewing in the business sector.

The findings of the Dunedin City Council review should help put the economic development and destination marketing agency on a suitable path for the future, Cr Andrew Whiley said.

Consultancy MyGovernance recommended the agency be disestablished as an internal council unit and run instead as a separate council-controlled organisation with its own board, supported by a stakeholders’ advisory group.

Relationships between Enterprise Dunedin and stakeholders were "mostly strained at best" and alignment was seriously lacking, the report highlighted.

Councillors decided in November last year to seek the review.

"Now, I put the motion forward last November because I understood there was frustration from the business sector and we could do better," Cr Whiley said.

"I had no idea what was going to come out of it, but I knew that we needed to do a review to see what we were doing right and what we were struggling with, or not quite getting cut-through with."

Cr Whiley said the review had generated important and relevant information about approaching the future of economic development in the city and the best way forward.
