Sunday parking charges to start

Visitors to Dunedin’s central city will now have to pay for parking week-round.

From tomorrow, paid parking will apply on Sunday, 9am to 6pm, in the Octagon, Moray Pl, Bath St, Filleul St, and parts of Stuart, St Andrew, Hanover, London Sts and Great King St ending at Frederick St.

In a statement, a Dunedin City Council spokesman said the changes also included the council’s off-street parking locations at Great King and Filleul Sts, Lower Moray Pl, Wall Street Mall and Dunedin Central Library.

In the past, there were no parking fees on Sunday in the city centre.

Councillors agreed to introduce the charges in the central city area as part of the nine-year plan process and further public consultation on the area charges applied took place earlier in the year.

The changes would encourage vehicle turnover and free up parking spaces for more customers and benefit local businesses, the spokesman said.

Charges will now be in place seven days a week, 9am to 6pm — except where signs indicate otherwise — in parts of the CBD as agreed by the council.

Prices would be consistent with fees charged on other days of the week and shown on parking meters and signs in the area, the spokesman said.

"The new signs cost $2486.50 and are being installed as part of our maintenance budget so we don’t yet have the associated installation costs for this."

Council staff said $150,000 in Sunday parking revenue had been included in council budgets and no additional staff hours were required to cover Sunday enforcement.

Parts of George and Princes Sts would remain free of charge with time restrictions enforced.

Users can pay via the Pay My Park app or by using the on-street parking meters. — Allied Media
