Callum Toomey may still be perfecting the art of eating with chopsticks, but he has no such troubles speaking the Japanese language.

The 17-year-old King's High School pupil recently finished third at the 23rd annual Japanese Speech Award (JSA) competition in Yawatahama, Japan.

Callum was delighted with the result.

He was competing against 19 other secondary school pupils from 18 countries, and he placed behind pupils from China and Hong Kong.

He said he had to deliver a five-minute speech in Japanese and then answer questions from unseen judges about his speech - all in Japanese.

As part of the competition, he also went to a wide rage of cultural workshops with other competitors, and participated in a cross-cultural experience programme which aimed to increase knowledge of the Japanese language and culture.

Callum was selected to represent New Zealand in the competition after winning the Dunedin Otaru Sister City Japanese Speech Competition in May.
