Accommodation is at a premium in Dunedin this weekend as the city hosts two major events of international interest.

The 2013 Otago Rally starts in Dunedin today and US musician Paul Simon will perform at Forsyth Barr Stadium tomorrow, his first gig on his New Zealand tour.

Both events had brought large numbers of diverse visitors to Dunedin, putting pressure on accommodation, Otago Motel Association president Richard Hanning said yesterday.

''It puts a lot of pressure on when we have several big events on at the same time, like this,'' he said.

''There is very little accommodation available in Dunedin this weekend. There are only really cancellations available.''

The Otago Rally will bring 81 drivers, each with an entourage of seven support crew, to Dunedin, while up to 18,000 fans are expected for the Paul Simon concert.

''Concerts and other big events at the stadium are definitely a drawcard. We've got people from as far away as Nelson here for Paul Simon,'' Mr Hanning said.

The 2013 Otago Rally starts today with the traditional pre-race inspection at 5pm in the Octagon.

The rally circuits were published in last weekend's Otago Daily Times.
