Waitati volunteer firefighter Bill Berends helps Dunedin boy Devon Loader (3) with a fire hose on Saturday during an open day at the Central Dunedin Fire Station to mark the Dunedin Fire Brigade's 150th anniversary.

Dunedin firefighters past and present stage an anniversary procession, accompanied by veteran fire engines, along Princes St, to First Church yesterday morning.

About 2500 people attended the open day at the fire station, part of a "very successful" weekend celebration, organisers said.

Southern Region Fire Safety Officer Barry Gibson said the open day had raised awareness about firefighting methods past and present, and fire safety issues.

About 160 people attended an anniversary dinner, and participants also attended a service at First Church yesterday morning.
