The Eagles have taken to the stage to cheers from the crowd at Forsyth Barr Stadium tonight.

The band started playing about 7.45pm opening the show with Seven Bridges Road (Home Free).

About 33,000 fans are dancing and singing along as the band plays some of their greatest hits.

Guitarist Joe Walsh said "we can now say we have played everywhere."

Don Henley said it was "great to be playing in your greenhouse."

The Eagles then had the near-capacity crowd swaying in their seats , with hits Take It Easy, One of These Nights, Take it to the Limit and Tequila Sunrise.

Earlier, Marlon Williams hit the stage before the main act and got the crowd warmed up.

Williams took to the stage for his set at about 6.30pm to a warm reception from the three-quarters full stadium.

He said it was a honour to open for the Eagles.

As he performed some of his hits like Party Boy, people started to fill their seats and the stadium was nearly at capacity at 7pm, just before he finished.

Prior to the concert, bars and restaurants in the Octagon were full before fans made their way to Forsyth Barr Stadium.

Concert-goers made the most of the warm evening sun with a few beverages and a bite to eat before making the short walk to the stadium.

Long-time Dunedin Eagles fan Glen Miller said tonight he was ticking one of the bands of his bucket list.

"A few of them like Tom Petty are starting to disappear so we're real keen to see them live specially because it's in Dunedin, you can't beat that."

Roger Mariu, of Tapanui, was making his way to the stadium on foot and said he had been a fan of the band since the 70s and tonight would be awesome.
