The Lookout Point bridge crossing the Southern motorway in Dunedin is on track to open in the next two or three months.

All 24 concrete beams are in place and attention has turned to finishing the bridge approaches and embankment walls, New Zealand Transport Agency project manager Simon Underwood said.

''Plus, there are edges, barriers and surfacing work to do on the bridge itself.''

The work is part of a $44 million, two-stage project to develop a wider, smoother approach through Dunedin's southern gateway.

The project is creating a four-lane road between Andersons Bay Rd and Lookout Point, along with the bridge over the highway near the top of the hill.

The bridge is expected to be completed by October or November.
