The incident unfolded at 11.54pm yesterday when police received reports of a crash in Andersons Bay, Acting Senior Sergeant Iain Notman said.
The vehicle driven by the 42-year-old was speeding very fast down the residential street before it crashed into a power pole and ended up down a driveway.
When police arrived, they found a front bumper lying in the road and saw skid marks in the street.
Following the tracks, they soon located the bumper-less car sitting at the end of a home’s driveway with its owner standing next to the door.
Officers had the person undergo a breath screening test, which they failed, and when they then required them to undergo an evidential breath test, the person refused.
They then walked away, hopped into their crashed car, closed the door and refused to get out.
The person then began ‘‘kicking officers and refusing to be handcuffed,’’ before threatening to "find and shoot" the arresting officers, Snr Sgt Notman said.
Police invoked a warrantless search and found a home-made taser, a knife, ammunition, and a homemade slam-fire shotgun — a pump-action firearm that fires immediately upon chambering a round if the trigger is held down.
The cache of weapons was a breach of the person’s protection order conditions they are subjected to.
The person was transported to police to Dunedin Hospital for assessment before they were taken to the Dunedin Central Police Station.
They were charged with operating a vehicle carelessly, refusing to accompany officer for breath test procedures, resisting arrest, threats to kill, unlawfully in position of a firearm and unlawfully in possession of a restricted weapon, unlawfully in position of ammunition and failing to comply with the conditions of a protection order.
They would appear in Dunedin District Court with their bail opposed.
