Five Dunedin teenagers were arrested in Invercargill on Saturday following a high-speed chase in the central city.
Police were forced to abandon the pursuit when the car they were following drove on the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic.
Senior Sergeant Dave Raynes, of Invercargill, said the vehicle driven by an 18-year-old youth reached speeds of up to 100kmh during the 20-minute pursuit which began about 8.30am. Traffic was reasonably heavy at the time.
The car had been stolen in Dunedin and two Dunedin males aged 18 and 15 and an 18-year-old woman were later arrested.
Duty Senior Sergeant Richard McPhail yesterday said the trio remained in custody and would face multiple charges in the Invercargill District and Youth Courts today.
Two passengers, aged 15 and 13, were returned to the care of Child, Youth and Family in Dunedin yesterday.
