After-work drinks ended badly for a Dunedin man when he lost control of his car and wrapped it around a power pole.

The 32-year-old was heading home in Hillside Rd, South Dunedin, on Wednesday night when his car spun in wet conditions at the Forbury Rd roundabout.

After telling police he had had ‘‘after-work drinks’’, he underwent breath-testing procedures, Sergeant Matt Lee said.

He recorded a breath-alcohol reading of 805mcg, more than three times the legal limit.

The man was uninjured and his vehicle was towed away.

He was charged with drink-driving and careless driving and his licence was suspended for 28 days.

Police conducted three checkpoints in the city on Wednesday, testing 898 drivers, finding only one driver over the legal limit.

The impairment checkpoints were in Bank St, King Edward St and Musselburgh Rise.

A 39-year-old woman failed her passive breath test at the Bank St checkpoint.

Her breath screening test returned a reading over 400mcg, Sgt Lee said.

The woman elected for a blood test and police are waiting for the results.

Sgt Lee described the results of the three checkpoints as ‘‘pretty good’’.
