A Dunedin man who led police on a 60km car chase to Palmerston may have been wondering why he just could not shake them off. While fleeing north, he had neglected to take off his electronic monitoring ankle bracelet which was reporting his every move directly to police, Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said.
At 2.45pm on Wednesday, police spotted the 39-year-old disqualified driver in central Dunedin.
When officers attempted to stop him in Helensburgh Rd, he took off at speed.
Police were able to track his every move thanks to his ankle bracelet.
As headed north on State Highway 1 police deployed spikes.
Eventually, his tyres were spiked south of Waikouaiti.
However, he continued north, driving dangerously and swerving, clipping another vehicle at low speed near Palmerston.
The crash resulted in minor damage but no injuries, Snr Sgt Bond said.
The man continued driving on his rims until his vehicle was inoperable.
He eventually came to a stop at the intersection of Horse Range and Factory Rds about 3.30pm.
He was arrested without further incident and charged with wilful damage — for trying to break off his ankle bracelet — reckless driving, driving while disqualified and failure to stop.
He was yesterday remanded in custody without plea and will re-appear in the Dunedin District Court later this month.
