Fortune friends no more

A Fortune Theatre lost to the city has also lost its friends.

Friends of the Fortune president Tess Gilfedder said the group decided to wind up at an extraordinary general meeting on Monday.

That ended 42 years of work by members who volunteered as ushers in the theatre, sold ice creams and chocolate, and did anything else required.

More than 100 members provided food for functions and raised money for the theatre.

The end of the group follows the closure of the theatre by the Fortune Theatre Trust in May, as the facility was no longer financially viable.

Mrs Gilfedder said a resolution to wind up was ratified at the meeting.

''It's sad, but we could see nothing else.''

Without the theatre ''where would we be?''.

Some of the members would consider helping that the Mayfair or Globe theatres.

About 30 members attended the meeting.

Funds left over after the group was wound up would go the Stage South and the Globe Theatre.
