Fellowship and friendship bloomed in Dunedin on Saturday.

Otago Rose Society and Heritage Roses Otago secretary Maureen Viggo said about 250 people, made up of up to six members from nearly 60 gardening clubs from across Otago, attended the Kindred Group Day at the Sargood Centre at Logan Park on Saturday.

''It's a good turnout,'' Mrs Viggo said.

The event started in 1980 in Sawyers Bay and moved around Otago, Mrs Viggo said.

The three speakers at the event were Murray Radka, Barbara Wheeler and Fran Rawling.

The three garden visits were to the Dunedin Northern Cemetery and two properties in Upper Junction - the homes of Ian Smith and Christine Cooper and Linda Hellyer and Craig South.

New Zealand Rose Society editor Rachael Chalmers, of Dunedin, said every member brought at least two plants to sell at a stall outside the centre at noon.

The stall was first in, first served.

''It can be hotly contested,'' Mrs Chalmers said.

Those who missed out on buying prized plants could buy tickets in nearly 100 raffles at the event, she said.

''It's a good day for everyone to have a bit of fellowship and friendship with people who have similar interests.''
