Rani Cousens fulfilled a life-long dream at graduation on Saturday.

The 21-year-old graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in marine science and ecology — something she had looked forward to doing as a child.

"Like lots of kids I think I wanted to become a marine biologist."

Miss Cousens was among the first cohort of people to graduate with a marine science major and said it went very well.

"It’s a really cool degree to have.

"It’s very hands-on, applied and multi-disciplinary.

"I really enjoyed that."

Marine science allowed her to learn about lots of different subjects including physics, chemistry and geography.

It was also "awesome" to be studying in one of the most historic parts of the University of Otago.

She was in the middle of her honours degree and was writing a dissertation exploring whether animals use geothermal areas for health benefits, much as people use spas.

"It’s kind of how people go to these health resorts and to have treatments."

Miss Cousens spent the summer collecting bird parasites, to analyse their DNA.

She was keen to get into conservation work for regional councils and environmental consultancies in the future.
