There was a rush for university textbooks among first-year health science students, who queued up to ensure they did not miss out on an in-demand paper at the St David lecture theatre yesterday.

University of Otago teaching fellow Janine Tansley said there had been more enrolments than usual for the second semester health-science course. The department of preventive and social medicine lecturer said about 1326 students had enrolled in the epidemiology paper.

The "higher-than-expected" figure meant department staff had ordered a second print run of textbooks, on top of the 1200 copies which were available yesterday, Ms Tansley said.

University academic and international deputy vice-chancellor Vernon Squire said the first day of lectures for the second semester had started well and it was good to see the campus busy again.

"We have had a steady stream of students, both new and returning," he said.

Prospective students have until the end of the first week of lectures to enrol in new courses, while those continuing their studies may add new papers, he said.

Traditional festivities organised by the Otago Students University Association (OUSA) for the week-long Re-Orientation begin today.

OUSA spokesman Alasdair Johnston said windy weather yesterday forced the postponment of a planned day of "carnival rides".

The traditional Clubs and Societies day is being held tomorrow in the University Union, and a market day is planned for Thursday on the union lawn.

An International Food Festival on Thursday night is scheduled on the union lawn, weather permitting, but would be moved inside the University Union if necessary, Mr Johnston said.
