Piling machines have started drilling the foundations for a new private hospital in Dunedin.

The site, between Anzac Ave and Harrow St, will house a three-storey facility, specialising in general and elective surgery, expected to open by mid-2028.

The initiative came from a consortium of Dunedin doctors who saw a need for expansion of health services in the city and would co-operate and work proactively with other services to address changing health environments.

Once completed, the consortium hoped it would serve over 10,000 patients per year.

The 0.39ha site is located a short distance from the University of Otago, Otago Polytechnic and Forsyth Barr Stadium.

In 2022 it had a capital valuation of $4.7 million.
