About three hundred young people gathered in a grassy area off Lovelock Ave, Dunedin, on Saturday afternoon.

Many of the people had been drinking, and fights broke out late in the afternoon, in the area close to the Northern Cemetery.

Police had earlier investigated a mid-afternoon incident, during which about five young people stood on a car in Butts Rd, damaging it and also smashing the windscreen.

It is also understood that a young man received moderate injuries when he apparently fell from the roof of a Butts Rd, Dunedin North, house about 6pm.

A series of scattered incidents round the city suggested extensive celebrating by some people, including a mid-afternoon report of a sizeable group of people standing on a house roof in the Warrender St area.

At least a couple of people were reportedly injured in fights, and one young man was seen with blood on his face.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand Willowbank Station Officer Ants O'Neill said a Willowbank appliance was called to the lookout area about 3.35pm to help with the care of an injured young man, after a possible assault.

He could not be found, and it was understood the man had already been taken to Dunedin Hospital by car, and police attended.

A person who went to the area about 4pm said the mood was unsettled, and there had been some earlier fighting.

A police spokeswoman said that 200-300 people had been partying at the Lovelock Ave lookout, but most had since been moved on by police.

Police were asked to sum up how they assessed the overall behaviour in the city in the afternoon, but no comment was available until later today, police said.

Comments

Comment on behaviour? Unsophisticated as always.

I would guess about 90 % of these people have no idea of who St Patrick was and about 30% have some Irish ancestry. It is all an excuse for dangerous drinking. Get off the streets at least and do it in your own nest.
