Intruder prompts warning

Three women in North Dunedin flats woke to a man standing over their beds on Sunday, prompting a warning about flat security.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said a female student woke at 4.30am to find a man standing over her in a Warrender St flat.

In the same flat on the same night, another woman woke to a man sitting at the end of her bed.

A woman in a neighbouring flat reported the same thing happening earlier, at 3.30am.

Both the flats were all-female.

The man had not been located but was described as a Caucasian male in his mid-20s, who was clean shaven and had very short hair.

No further description was available.

Snr Sgt Dinnissen warned students to lock their doors and call 111 as soon as something like this happened.

"Flat security is a big thing.

"If you're in a flat [and this happened] you should be waking your flatmates up; make some noise."

He said police would be increasing their presence in the area as a result.

"It's a horrible motive, whatever it is."
