Knitting woollen squares at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum as part of St Andrew’s Day celebrations yesterday are (clockwise from left) Sally Ealson, Virginia Perry, Yvonne Sharpe, Elsiee Sanderling, Mary Dawson, Toitu visitor host Jenee Still,  Robyn Farley and Ruth Tikey.

Ms Still said St Andrew’s Day was traditionally a time to perform a charitable act or an act of kindness.

The squares knitted by the group will be made into a blanket and given to Pregnancy Help Otago.

Anyone was able to join the group throughout the day and knit what they could.Ms Still was not sure how big or how many squares would be produced.

"We’ll just see how we go. Everyone has different styles and everyone has different speeds."

St Andrew is Scotland’s patron saint.

The day is usually marked with a celebration of Scottish culture and November 30 is a public holiday in Scotland.
