There was no sax or violins in out-of-the-way areas of Dunedin’s city centre yesterday — but there were a few guitars, singers and a trumpet player.

And they were making a killing when it came to busking, especially 16-year-old guitarist and singer Troy Elliott.

Thousands of people flooded into the city to do their last-minute Christmas shopping, and within an hour of sitting himself down on his skateboard with his well-used trusty guitar, Troy had made himself about $50 worth of coins and small notes.

"It was a great atmosphere. I had an awesome time.

"Christmas time is one of the best times to go busking.

"There’s a lot of people about, they’ve got a lot of cheer and goodwill, and they’re out to spend money."

Troy was pleased with his haul and said he would put the money towards a new guitar he had had his eye on.

Unfortunately, this Christmas story does not have a warm and fluffy ending.

He did not yet have enough money to buy it.

"It’s an ongoing project, that.

"It gives me something to look forward to."
