Learning centre reopens

Generous donations have reopened the doors of the Community Learning Centre in Dunedin.

Teacher Trudy Scott said the centre had taught adult students with intellectual disabilities for 20 years but closed late last year after government funding stopped.

Four ''generous'' donations allowed the centre to reopen after the summer break, she said.

The donations were enough to cover costs until the Lottery Grants Board met later this month to process a grant application for the centre, she said.

''We are going to need that [grant] but we are OK for the next couple of months.''

The centre, run by Logan Park High School, failed to fit the adult education criteria set by the Education Ministry and was closed.

Articles on the closure in the Otago Daily Times prompted people to approach the centre with donations, she said.

''We are very grateful for the generous people who have made that happen. That is keeping us going while we wait for the outcome of the lotteries.''

The 19 students at the centre, aged between 20 and 50, were enjoying learning life skills three days a week.
