Leith Saddle walkway delay

Another month is likely to be needed to complete the Leith Saddle walkway, following delays due to problems with the track realignment late last year.

The 3.2km gazetted walkway, on Dunedin City Council land near Dunedin's Northern Motorway, is undergoing an upgrade worth $300,000 to $400,000.

It was originally meant to be finished in time for Anniversary Day, a week ago.

Department of Conservation community relations officer John Gordon said work was about to start on the final stages of the walkway's upper level.

The walkway incorporated a base layer of geotextile cloth.

A plastic geogrid would be laid above that for strength, and it would be covered with 100mm of drainage metal/gravel.

The metal/gravel for the surface would be trucked to the site and lifted on to the walkway with a helicopter.
