Man charged after firearm search

A 22-year-old Dunedin man has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm after a lengthy search for a firearm that sparked an armed offenders callout in July.

The firearm, a double-barrelled shotgun, was allegedly used in an assault during a fracas between two groups in North Dunedin, Sergeant Chris McLellan, of Dunedin, said.

The firearm was recovered by armed offenders squad members from a vehicle parked in Timaru St, Dunedin, yesterday, and the owner of the vehicle subsequently arrested at his place of work.

The person alleged to have committed the July assault was involved in an armed offenders callout that ended with his apprehension at Wingatui.

The weapon was not located at that time.

The 22-year-old man arrested yesterday was given police bail to appear in the Dunedin District Court next week, Sgt McLellan said.
