Man's jaw broken in North Dunedin attack

A 23-year-old man underwent surgery in Dunedin Hospital yesterday for a head injury and a broken jaw received during an alleged assault in Northeast Valley, Dunedin, early on Saturday.

Detective Sergeant Chris Henderson said the man, with blood pouring from his head, wandered from the Duddingstone Steps, off North Rd, into a nearby house just after midnight.

Police believed the man had been attacked, Det Sgt Henderson said.

The man was in a stable condition in hospital last night.

Police had not been able to speak with him yet but had been making inquiries yesterday.

Det Sgt Henderson asked anyone who had any information, or had seen anything suspicious in the area on Friday night or early on Saturday, to contact police.

* Two 16-year-olds who appeared in the Dunedin youth court on Saturday were each charged with three counts of burglary, Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken, of Dunedin, said.

Police urged people to check their belongings and anyone who noticed items missing from their homes in the City Rise area on Friday should contact them.

The youths were remanded to reappear on Thursday.
