The run of Dunners stunners is set to pass as cooler temperatures hit coastal Otago today.

MetService meteorologist April Clark said the region was in for a ''mixed bag'' today after yesterday was marked by high temperatures and strong winds.

''Around the coast, a few showers with cloud [are expected for today],'' she said.

''Central [Otago] is not too bad, but [there] may be some late cloud.

''It's a mixed bag - not great, but not too bad.''

Oamaru and Dunedin could expect temperatures in the mid-teens with occasional showers.

It is in stark contrast to the warm temperatures felt yesterday.

Dunedin's temperature reached a high of 24degC which, combined with strong gusts, helped fan a blaze in forest on Signal Hill.

The gusts were brought about by northwesterlies bringing a front over coastal Otago yesterday morning, Miss Clark said.

A southwesterly change in the afternoon meant exposed coastal areas were again buffeted by strong winds.

Gusts of 78kmh were recorded on the outskirts of Dunedin, while gusts of 70kmh hit Alexandra.

Oamaru experienced gusts of 76kmh in the morning, she said.

Alexandra and Oamaru were also the pick of the bunch for temperatures.

Both towns reached highs of 27degC, while Wanaka recorded 26degC as did Cromwell.

The cool change which was expected to affect coastal Otago from today, was also expected to bring cooler temperatures to Central Otago from tomorrow.

The poor weather might continue into the new year with a ''not great start'' expected for revellers in the region.

Showers were expected late on Saturday and early Sunday, Miss Clark said.
