A residential therapeutic community housing facility for men in Dunedin has been given an early Christmas present.

Otago Community Trust gave more than $1.7million to 67 community groups across Otago in its November funding round.

The money includes $400,000 for Moana House - a support service for men with alcohol and drug problems and a history of offending.

Moana House programme director Claire Aitken said the money would be used to extend its facilities in High St.

''This funding means a great deal to us. It is a tremendous boost.''

The project aimed to build a new facility on land at 403 High St.

The new facility would free up space in the existing houses for three beds to be added.

''This project, upon completion, will allow us to make significant improvements to our facilities. We have an ever-growing wait list and we will be able to manage this better, with more beds available, more meeting space and common areas.''

About 150 men were on the waiting list for Moana House, Ms Aitken said.

Community groups in Kaitangata and Cromwell also benefited from the funding round.

Kaitangata Community Centre Charitable Trust was given a $120,000 towards the development of its community centre.

Cromwell Primary School received $150,000 to help build a multipurpose facility for use by the school and by Cromwell Kids Fun Club and the wider Cromwell community.

The building at the school was designed to seat 350 people.

Principal Wendy Brooks said the school was ''delighted'' to get the funding.
