It was a close shave in the end, but five Dunedin men have raised over $800 for men’s health as part of the Movember movement.

Five men from Pacific Edge grew their moustaches  during  November in a bid to raise money and awareness for men’s health — in particular, prostate and bladder cancer.

Four of the men, Brent Pownall, Tony Lough, Lux Selvanesan and Mark Dalphin, live in Dunedin.

A fifth, San Tin, lives in Singapore.

They called themselves "the MOchines".

The five men shaved their furry faces yesterday after spending the month  encouraging friends and family to give money to the cause.

Mr Pownall had grown a moustache a few times before this and although it could be annoying at times, it was worth the effort.

"It’s for a good cause, so you put those [issues] to one side."

Next year he intended to grow it again and hoped the fundraising  efforts by Pacific Edge would be "bigger and better".

There was also a cultural divide among the men, as Mr Selvanesan discovered. In Indian culture growing a moustache was considered the norm and shaving it off at the start of the month to grow again was peculiar. His family had never seen him clean-shaven before.

Mr Selvanesan almost didn’t recognise himself.

Mr Pownall and Mr Lough were glad to be rid of their moustaches.

Pacific Edge customer experience and digital marketing director Dora Yip said the men worked hard over the month. By encouraging friends and family to give to the cause as well as using social media, the five men raised $830 collectively. A last-minute donation of $100 pushed the collection over $800, she said.
