A public meeting to discuss swimming pool options for Mosgiel was needed sooner rather than later, some Mosgiel Taieri Community Board members urged during a meeting yesterday.
‘‘We need to have a public meeting to bring people together to put their ideas forward,'' said board member Martin Dillon.
Feedback was needed from people who used the pool, he said.
Options outlined in a Dunedin City Council report last year should be presented to the public, and a proposal from the Taieri Community Facilities Trust also had merit, Mr Dillon said.
Options in the council report included maintaining or upgrading the present swimming pool, which is open for seven months of the year, or developing a new Mosgiel Aquatic Centre, which would be open yearround.
The Taieri Trust has proposed building a new swimming pool in the Mosgiel Memorial Gardens, between the playground and the memorial stadium.
Board member Bill Feather said although the Taieri Trust had developed one idea, the board should ensure it invited the community to submit further ideas.
Board member Chris Adams said it was important to have a public meeting so people could understand the present options and proposals were ‘‘only a stake in the ground'' from which to take the process further.
Some people would undoubtedly already be upset by the proposal to ‘‘pull out the roses'' and build a swimming pool in the gardens, he said.
Board member John Kelly said the board needed to keep driving the development of a new swimming pool. The board agreed to call a public meeting and work with council staff to set a date as soon as possible.
