The Saddle Hill Community Board has joined an effort to keep footpaths clear for pedestrians.

At a board meeting at the Civic Centre on Thursday, deputy chairwoman Leanne Stenhouse moved the board pay $30 a year to be a member of Living Streets Aotearoa, New Zealand’s primary advocacy organisation for people on foot.

Membership of the group would allow the board access to "yellow feet" cards.

The reverse, or "sole", of the card reads: "Please don’t park on the footpath — it puts others at risk.

"You could be towed or fined.

"Children could get hit if forced on to the road.

"Wheelchairs and pushchairs can’t get past.

"Vision-impaired people could injure themselves."

The cards would be available to anyone to put under the  windshield wipers of vehicles parked on footpaths in the board’s catchment. The cards would be available from board members, she said.

Board member Peter Gouverneur seconded the motion and every board member present voted in favour.
