Sergeant Matt Lee said police were patrolling the Octagon about 1.45am on Sunday when they saw two men ‘‘in a heated argument’’.
Police intervened when the men started pushing each other, separating the pair and advising them to go their separate ways.
One of them did.
But the other, an intoxicated 21-year-old man, continued with his aggressive behaviour, Sgt Lee said.
‘‘He forcefully and aggressively pushed a police officer and, while being arrested, he has grabbed hold of an officer’s uniform and refused to let go.’’
OC (oleoresin capsicum) spray, also known as pepper spray, was deployed and the man was successfully arrested.
The man was bailed to appear in the Dunedin District Court at a later date, charged with assaulting police, speaking threateningly and disorderly behaviour, Sgt Lee said.
