ORC having flood scheme benefits assessed

The Otago Regional Council is arranging for an independent economic assessment to be undertaken on the level of public benefit generated from flood and drainage schemes in the Taieri area.

In a report tabled at yesterday's ORC finance and corporate committee meeting, corporate services director Nick Donnelly said the ORC had accepted a request from Taieri ratepayers for the independent assessment.

Mr Donnelly said the request was made during consultation on the ORC's 2015-25 long-term plan.

The council had also agreed to a review of its revenue policies for the flood and drainage schemes, ''in respect of the public/private benefit of those schemes''.

The assessment would also be undertaken for the Lower Clutha flood and drainage scheme, to ensure a consistent approach was taken.

A request for a proposal had been prepared for suppliers, also involving the Lower Taieri flood protection scheme and the West and East Taieri drainage schemes.

The ORC would soon be selecting the successful supplier.
