The University of Otago has been granted 400 of the government-subsidised summer research scholarships designed to provide more work opportunities for tertiary students.
The scheme came out of the Prime Minister's job summit earlier this year, after universities expressed concerns that there were insufficient jobs for students during the holidays.
In this year's budget, $4 million went to fund the initiative, with the upper limit on scholarship places set at 1600.
The scholarships enable students to carry out approved full-time research for 10 weeks and receive $5000, half paid by their university and half by the Government.
Tertiary Education Minister Anne Tolley said last week the scheme was a success, with all 1600 places filled.
Otago and the University of Auckland, New Zealand's two largest universities, have been granted 400 scholarships each.
Victoria University has 350, the University of Canterbury 200, the University of Waikato 100, and Auckland University of Technology, Massey University and Lincoln University 50 each.
