A person was flown to Dunedin Hospital after falling 10m down a bank at a "notorious" area at Cape Saunders yesterday.

A Hato Hone St John spokesman said the service was notified of the incident, understood to be  "fall-related", about 1.30pm yesterday.

One operations manager and one helicopter responded to the call and a patient in  moderate condition was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital.

A police spokesman said someone had fallen down a 10m bank while walking near Kaimata and Cape Saunders Rds.

Helicopters Otago chief executive and Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter service operator Graeme Gale said it was a relatively straightforward winching operation.

The place where the person had fallen was "very rocky" and "craggy" and in an area where there had been incidents over the years, including fatalities.

"Like anyone that gets picked up in an area like that, they're extremely pleased to see us.

"That area is quite notorious for having some serious incidents ... "

Getting off the rocks was "pretty challenging" and the person had done the right thing by waiting, Mr Gale said.

From the rescuers' point of view, it was "just another day at work" and "a good outcome".
