Police cars surrounded a vehicle on the Northern Motorway on the outskirts of Dunedin yesterday after a short chase.

Sergeant Chris George, of Dunedin, said a state highway patrol car pulled over the vehicle, containing three adults and a child, for a traffic check about 2.30pm but the driver only stopped briefly and a chase ensued.

A 34-year-old Christchurch man was arrested and charged with failing to remain stopped for police. He will appear in the Dunedin District Court today.
