Chiron-Blessed Starlight (aka Joshua Terehunga Edwards), 42, appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday.
He did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody until his next appearance later this month.
The defendant faced charges of burgling two law firms on June 28-29, threatening to kill police and possessing a sword.
He did not enter pleas to any charges.

The court appearance comes after armed police officers swarmed Maitland St on Tuesday.
At least seven armed officers, four police vehicles and a dog unit could be seen.
Police originally went to the Maitland St address around 10am to speak to the occupant, but he refused to come out after being placed under arrest, Acting Senior Sergeant Iain Notman, of Dunedin, said.
The area was cordoned off while the police armed offenders squad and negotiating team resolved the situation.
‘‘Eventually, the male exited the address and was arrested without incident,’’ Acting Snr Sgt Notman said.
‘‘Police thank the public in the area for their patience while the incident was brought to a safe resolution.’’
