Bomb threats hoaxes of 'overseas origin': police

Police say the threats against schools around New Zealand  this week were hoaxes.

Schools  in various towns and cities, including Logan Park High School in Dunedin, were the targets of an automated phone message threatening them on Thursday.

Police yesterday confirmed the threats were spurious and the origin of the messages were from overseas.

"Further investigation by police into the origin of the calls received by a number of schools yesterday have established they had come from overseas," police said in a statement.

"In the last 24 hours, police have continued to liaise with our international partners as the call trail led police to an overseas origin."

Logan Park High School was evacuated about 12.20pm on Thursday following a hoax bomb threat.

It bore similarities to those received earlier this year by the school and dozens of others around New Zealand.

Police would not release the names of the schools involved in the latest threats, but other media reported schools in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Gisborne, Palmerston North, Masterton and Christchurch were affected.

It was unclear why the schools were targeted, schools in the US and Australia had been the subject of similar hoaxes in recent months.

Logan Park High School had been targeted by threats on at least four occasions since January.
