A man has been apprehended by police, just 30 minutes after he allegedly attempted to rob a takeaway store in Fairfield.

A New Zealand Police spokeswoman said the incident happened about 5.55pm at Fairfield Takeaways on Main Rd, between Park Ln and Hartley St.

"A male has tried to take money from the store.

"Information is limited at this stage because of the language barrier, but the person behind the counter said a person came into the shop wearing a disguise - they've got a partially covered face, wearing a hat, a jacket and long pants - unknown colours.

"He was of skinny build and about 1.8m tall."

She said nothing was stolen, but the man drove off in a vehicle towards Mosgiel.

A number of police vehicles were dispatched and the alleged offender was apprehended by 6.20pm. He is being questioned in relation to the attempted robbery.
