Station repairs continue

Repairs are continuing at the South Dunedin community police station more than a year after it was closed to the public because of flooding.

A police media spokesman said repair work "continues to make progress'' and the station would open again "as soon as possible''.

No timeframe for its reopening was provided.

"Police are confident the contractors are making great progress in ensuring the station is safe and fit for purpose for when it reopens. Police will not compromise the safety of anyone, including staff, while these repairs are being carried out,'' the spokesman said in an email.

There were still several ways to report crime, including calling the central Dunedin station or ringing 111, he said.

"Our staff also continue to be approachable on the streets when members of the public would like to talk.''

The Macandrew Rd building has been closed since floodwaters extensively damaged the ground floor last June.

The road policing group relocated to the North Dunedin station but the neighbourhood policing team, Dunedin dog section and the serious crash unit continued to work from the building.

Prominent South Dunedin community advocates all expressed concern in May that the station had not reopened to the public.

Otago Coastal area commander Inspector Jason Guthrie said at the time it was "regrettable'' it had taken so long for repairs to start and police "appreciate'' the public's patience.
