Dunedin caregivers were left frustrated by a failed raid by armed police that played out as they were trying to get children home from school.

However, police have defended their actions, saying the raid was to ensure the safety of the community.

Police tried to locate a person of interest in a pre-planned raid about 2.45pm in Riselaw Rd yesterday.

Although a youth appeared to be led away in handcuffs about 3.25pm, police later said no arrests were made.

A Riselaw Rd resident at the scene said officers from the armed offenders squad could be seen at a house being searched.

One mother said the cordon, between Corstorphine Rd and Panmure Ave, left her frustrated.

"It doesn't help that the kids are excited about it and want to see what's going on," she said.

One caregiver said she was trying to deliver the special needs child she was looking after to his mother in Panmure Ave, but had been waiting more than half an hour because of the police action.

A youth in a red hoodie and handcuffs was escorted to a police car by an officer.

Police at the scene referred inquiries to the police media centre.

A police spokeswoman said the warrant was pre-planned.

Officers were exercising a search warrant to locate a person who was involved in a family harm incident on Tuesday, the spokeswoman said.

The address of interest had been cordoned off and actions taken by staff were to ensure the safety of the community.

The person had not been located and inquiries were ongoing to locate them.

The spokeswoman was not aware of any arrests.
