Three Anderson's Bay School pupils put their hands over their mouths in shock when they learned they had won the Otago Daily Times Extra! Otago years 5 and 6 currents events quiz yesterday.

Oliver Grubb (9), Aidan Blakie (10) and Tegen Baldwin (11), comprising Anderson's Bay School team 24, agreed winning was ''quite good'', and had also come as a surprise.

They had been ''a bit shocked'' at their win over 44 other teams, Tegen said.

Their winning score in the closely-contested event at the Bathgate School hall was 90 out of 100.

Taieri College pupils Emily Evans (12), Tom Cunningham (12) and Caden Anderson (12), who together comprised Taieri College team 39, were also later surprised to learn they had won another close competition for years 7 and 8 pupils.

Fifty-five teams had competed in this section, well up on last year.

Emily said the event had been ''really tense'', and after the team members had been ''nervous at first'' she had been ''so excited'' at the outcome.
