Quality in medical teaching recognised

Prof John Campbell, a University of Otago senior medical researcher, teacher and clinician in geriatrics, has received a leading university award for quality in medical teaching.

Dunedin School of Medicine dean Dr John Adams announced this week that Prof Campbell had received the dean's senior staff award for quality in teaching.

Prof Campbell, who was dean of the university Faculty of Medicine from 1995 until 2005, continued to make a major contribution to the school, Dr Adams told more than 60 people at an awards ceremony at Dunedin Hospital.

"He provides enormous wisdom and experience to the staff and students in the section of medicine and the school," Dr Adams said.

Prof Campbell is also the chairman of the Medical Council of New Zealand.

Other school teaching awards. - Dean's commendation to senior staff for teaching: Mr Andrew Audeau, Dr Ben Brockway, Dr Wendy Busby, Dr L. J (Vic) du Plessis, Prof Andre van Rij.

Dean's commendation to Invercargill teaching staff: Dr Kimball Chen, Mr Julian Speight, Mr David Tulloch.

Dean's award to a registrar showing commitment and quality in teaching: Dr Cindy Towns; commended, Dr Animesh Chatterjee, Dr Katy Blower, Dr Jonathan Graham, Dr Teurai Chikura, Dr Ashish Taneja.

Dean's award to a house surgeon showing commitment and quality in teaching: Dr Helen Chignell; commended, Dr Ben Wilkins, Dr Xiaoyuan Zhai.

Dean's award to a trainee intern who has shown commitment and aptitude for teaching: Rachel Dyer; commended, Debra Wilson, Libby De Lautour.

Dean's certificate to the nursing team which has provided the best learning environment for medical students: Ward 6A, North Community Mental Health.
