A group calling for Dunedin’s proposed rates rise of 17.5% to be cut has pledged to keep the city council accountable.

After a public meeting last Friday, members of the Reduce Rates Group would now present their thoughts in writing, spokeswoman Sandy Lotus said.

This would lay out expectations and potential solutions and ask councillors for their response.

"We want to hold them to account, on behalf of the people", Ms Lotus said.

She was satisfied with how the meeting went and said more meetings would be held.

Ms Lotus said the Dunedin City Council had allowed debt to escalate and the group was worried about unnecessary spending.

Dunedin Mayor Jules Radich and Crs Lee Vandervis, Carmen Houlahan and Mandy Mayhem spoke at Friday’s meeting and there were questions from the floor.

Issues covered in their opening remarks included cost pressures, an ageing network of pipes, introduction of a revamped rubbish and recycling kerbside collection service and a potential sale of Aurora Energy.

Cr Vandervis, who chairs the council’s finance and council-controlled organisations committee, said if a decision was made to sell Aurora, he would ensure the council got good value.

There was also an introductory speech from Central Otago district Teviot Valley Community Board member Gill Booth, who has been affiliated with Voices for Freedom.
