The Otago Regional Council is monitoring rising river levels after heavy rain pelted the area overnight.

The council had warned farmers in affected areas to move stock and camping grounds had been notified, environmental services manager Martin King said.

It was monitoring the Taieri River west of Dunedin, Manuherikia River in Central Otago and Pomahaka River in South Otago, which had yet to reach peak levels, he told NZPA this afternoon.

"Rain levels have reduced right down. What we're watching and monitoring is the water coming down from the heads into the mouths of the rivers."

The council had been ringing people at risk, he said.

Water levels on rivers in northern Otago had already peaked and were steadily dropping down, Mr King said.
