Road crash victim named

The 39-year-old Dunedin motorcyclist killed in a crash near Balclutha on Monday was named by police yesterday as Lynne Margaret Donald.

Mrs Donald, a mother of two from Ravensbourne, died when the motorcycle she was riding collided with a car on State Highway 1 south of Balclutha just before 6pm.

It was the eighth road death of the Labour Weekend.

Mrs Donald's husband, Murray (39), was riding a motorcycle behind his wife and fell when his machine collided with hers; he was not injured.

On social networking sites, Mrs Donald posted her profile picture as her Suzuki Boulevard C90 1500cc motorcycle, and listed her current city as Dunedin, but her home town as Mataura Island, near Gore.

She said she was the mother of two "awesome" teenage daughters, had lived in Dunedin since January this year and had previously worked for New Zealand Post.

Prior to living in Dunedin, she lived in Invercargill.

A colleague at the Otago Regional Council, where she worked as an environmental data officer, said Mrs Donald was "more than capable" at her job, was well-liked even though she only recently started working there, and would be "greatly missed" by her colleagues.

Mrs Donald's family members declined to comment when contacted yesterday.

Sergeant Martin Bull, of Balclutha, said Monday's crash occurred when Mrs Donald failed to take a moderate bend and collided with a southbound Toyota Camry, which was towing a boat.

The police serious crash unit was investigating the crash, but at this early stage it appeared Mrs Donald crossed the centre line and went into the path of the southbound vehicle.

NZPA said the first death of the weekend was reported on Friday when Peter Thomas Hughes (60), of Palmerston North, was killed on SH2 at Matamau, in southern Hawkes Bay, about 8.15pm.

About noon on Saturday, University of Otago student Jessie McKenzie Lineham (20), of Invercargill, died after her car and another collided about 15km east of Mataura on SH93 in Southland.

West Coast teenager Harmony Wihongi (16) died on Saturday after the Toyota Hilux she was travelling in left the road and crashed on State Highway 67, just north of Westport, about 11pm.

Two more teenagers Liam Manu Tumai (18) and Katie Blake (17) died just hours later when the car they were passengers in crashed on a rural Waikato road about 1.15am.

Later on Sunday, truck driver Russel John Clark (48), of Christchurch, died in a crash on State Highway 1 , near Kaikoura, at 8.30am.

Betty Rose Walker (74), of Wanganui, died about 4pm when her car collided with another 11km north of Wanganui.
