Romance began at the picture house

Attending the pictures alone after being "ditched" by her brother who refused to accompany her for their regular outing, Joan Young had no idea she was about to meet her future husband.

Mrs Young (nee Magee) and husband Frank, of Mornington, Dunedin, celebrated 65 years of marriage yesterday with lunch and a family gathering.

Neither can recall the movie that brought them together so many years ago.

Aged 15 at the time, Mrs Young (86) said her mother allowed her to attend the movie alone because her brother and his friend refused to take her.

She found herself seated near Mr Young, who "caught up" with her after the movie.

They bought an "eskimo pie" ice cream each, "and that was it".

The couple became engaged before Mr Young (90) went to serve in World War 2 for four years, fighting in Egypt and Italy.

Married upon his return, at St Peter's Anglican Church in Temuka, the young couple moved to Stirling, near Balclutha, for a job in the railway.

Houses in the post-war period were hard to come by and the fact Mr Young's job came with a house in the settlement's railway compound was a big plus.

The couple had two daughters and a son and now have 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, with two more on the way.

Both enjoy bowls and are active members of St Mary's Anglican Church.

Mr Young worked in the railways, eventually as a shed foreman, until his retirement about 30 years ago.
