Dunedin fire crews cut the roof from a car to free a trapped man after a head-on collision on Highcliff Rd, Otago Peninsula, yesterday.

Station officer Scott Lindsay, of St Kilda, said appliances from St Kilda and Lookout Point fire stations were called to attend the two-car accident at 5.28pm.

A woman (22) was assisted from a grey Suzuki Swift into an ambulance, while ''jaws of life'' were used to cut the roof from a red Mitsubishi Colt so the trapped driver (46) could be given emergency treatment before being freed and assisted into another ambulance.

Ambulance communication centre team manager John Sneesby said the man and woman sustained moderate to serious injuries and were taken to Dunedin Hospital.
